Lesson 13: Understanding the Memory Text

Memory Text

Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is” (1 John 3:2, NKJV).

  • As we come to the final lesson of this quarter, God directs our attention to the future He has prepared for His people.
  • The world around us is filled with uncertainty. We see suffering, loss, and signs that Jesus is coming soon.
  • Yet this memory text reminds us that our future is secure because it rests in Christ.

Beloved, now we are children of God…”

  • John begins by reminding believers that they are loved by God.
  • Before speaking about heaven, he speaks about our relationship with God today.
  • Many people think of salvation only as something future. But through Jesus, we already belong to God’s family.
  • No matter what challenges we face, we can live with the assurance that we are His children now.

“…and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be…”

  • There are many things about heaven that we do not fully understand.
  • The Bible tells us that heaven will be free from pain, sorrow, and death, but the full glory of eternity is still beyond our imagination.
  • Sometimes we wish God would answer every question about the future. Instead, He invites us to trust Him.
  • We may not know everything that lies ahead, but we know the One who is leading us there.

“…but we know that when He is revealed…”

  • While many details remain unknown, one truth is certain: Jesus is coming again.
  • This promise runs through the entire lesson.
  • The same Savior who died for us, intercedes for us, and walks with us today will soon appear in glory.
  • God has never broken a promise, and He will not fail us now.

“…we shall be like Him…”

  • Sin has left deep scars on humanity.
  • We struggle with temptation, weakness, and disappointment.
  • But God’s work in us is not finished.
  • When Jesus returns, He will complete the work He began. Our sinful nature will be gone, and we will reflect His character in a way that is impossible in this fallen world.
  • What a wonderful hope for every believer who longs for victory over sin.

“…for we shall see Him as He is.”

  • This is the greatest promise in the verse.
  • Today we know Jesus through prayer, Scripture, and faith.
  • One day we will see Him face-to-face.
  • The One we have trusted without seeing will stand before us in all His glory.
  • Every trial endured, every prayer offered, and every act of faith will seem worthwhile when we finally look upon our Savior.

What This Means for You

  • Perhaps life feels difficult right now.
  • Perhaps you are waiting for answers, healing, or strength.
  • This memory text reminds us not to focus only on present struggles.
  • God is preparing something far better than anything this world can offer.
  • You are His child today.
  • Jesus is coming soon.
  • And one day you will see Him for yourself.

Closing Thought

  • The Christian hope is not merely about a better place.
  • It is about being with a better Person.
  • Very soon, faith will become sight, and God’s children will finally see Jesus face-to-face.
  • Until then, let us keep our eyes fixed on Him and hold firmly to His promises.
