Summary

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ…”

• The grace of Jesus is God’s undeserved love and favor toward sinners.
• This grace was revealed most fully when Jesus gave Himself to save us.
• Our giving should therefore begin with gratitude for what God has already given us.

“…that though He was rich…”

• Jesus was rich in heavenly glory before He came to this world.
• He shared the glory He had with the Father before the world existed.
• His riches therefore point beyond earthly possessions to His divine glory and heavenly position.

“…yet for your sakes He became poor…”

• Jesus willingly left heavenly glory and came to this world of sin and suffering.
• He took upon Himself human nature and lived a life of humility and sacrifice.
• He ultimately gave His life on the cross for our salvation.
• His poverty was therefore not merely a lack of material possessions.
• It describes the great sacrifice involved in His incarnation, ministry, suffering, and death.

“…that you through His poverty might become rich.”

• Jesus did not become poor because He had lost His divine worth.
• He gave up heavenly glory and accepted the condition of humanity for our salvation.
• Through His sacrifice, we may receive forgiveness, reconciliation with God, and the hope of eternal life.
• These are the true riches that Christ makes available to us.

What This Means for You

• Everything you have ultimately comes from God.
• Your time, abilities, resources, influence, and possessions are gifts entrusted to you.
• When you understand what Christ has given for you, your attitude toward giving begins to change.
• You give because you have received God’s grace, not because you are trying to earn His favour.
• Give willingly, wisely, and according to what God has entrusted to you.
• Use what you have to bless others and help advance the gospel.
• Christian stewardship is therefore not only about money.
• It is about giving yourself to God and allowing Him to use what you have for His mission.

• Jesus gave Himself so that you could receive the riches of salvation.
• His example teaches you to live with a giving heart.
• When you first give yourself to God, your time, abilities, resources, and influence can become instruments for His work.
• The greatest gift has already been given: Jesus Christ.
• Our giving is a grateful response to His grace and love.
