Lesson 3: Understanding 2 Chronicles 20:20
Memory Text
“Jehoshaphat stood and said, ‘Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.'” — 2 Chronicles 20:20 (NKJV)
Introduction
- This week’s lesson shows how God used human prophets to guide His people.
- True prophets spoke God’s message even when it was unpopular.
- Jehoshaphat’s words to Judah still speak to us today: trust God, listen to His Word, and follow His guidance.
Understanding 2 Chronicles 20:20
- Understanding 2 Chronicles 20:20 helps us see the importance of trusting God and following His guidance through His Word.
- Jehoshaphat encouraged Judah to put their confidence in God during a time of great danger and to believe the message God had given through His prophet.
- The verse also reminds us to test every message against Scripture.
- True faith involves trusting God’s promises, standing firm during difficulties, and obeying His direction even when the outcome is uncertain.
“Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem…”
- Three armies were marching against Judah, and the people were terrified.
- Jehoshaphat called them to stop and listen, because fear was drowning out everything else.
- When trouble comes and your heart is racing, God asks you to quiet yourself and hear Him.
“Believe in the Lord your God…”
- Judah’s army was no match for the enemy, and Jehoshaphat knew it.
- He called the people to put their confidence in God, not in their soldiers or their walls.
- When you face a problem bigger than your resources, you do not have to pretend you can handle it alone.
“…and you shall be established…”
- God had told Judah to stand still and watch Him fight for them.
- To be established means to take your position and stand firm, trusting God to do what you cannot do.
- When everything in you wants to run or fight in your own strength, God calls you to stand still and trust Him.
“Believe His prophets…”
- God had already spoken through Jahaziel: “The battle is not yours, but God’s.”
- Believing the prophet meant acting on a message that sounded impossible.
- Not everyone who claims to speak for God is true, so test every message by Scripture.
- When you hear a voice claiming to be from God, examine it carefully, and follow only what aligns with His Word.
“…and you shall prosper.”
- Prosperity here does not mean wealth or a life without hardship.
- Judah prospered because they trusted God’s message and obeyed it, and God gave them deliverance.
- They did not have to fight. They watched God win the battle for them.
- When you trust God and follow His direction, He brings the victory in His way and in His time.
What This Means for You
- When fear and uncertainty arise, trust God rather than relying only on your own understanding.
- Study His Word and test what you hear against Scripture.
- Follow God’s guidance even when it challenges your plans or is unpopular.
- God’s guidance may not always lead you along the easiest path, but He remains faithful.
- Let your faith shape your daily choices, your relationships, and your service to others.
A Final Thought
- Judah’s strength was not in its army, but in its trust in God.
- Trust His promises, test every teaching by His Word, and follow His guidance.
- You may not know what lies ahead, but you can know the One who leads you.
