Lesson 2: Understanding Isaiah 6:8

Memory Text

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?’ Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’” — Isaiah 6:8 (NKJV)

Introduction

  • This week’s lesson shows how God calls people to carry His message to others.
  • Prophets were called to lead people back to God, warn them against sin, and point them to the hope of salvation.
  • Isaiah’s experience teaches us that God’s call begins with His grace and leads to willing service.

Understanding the Memory Text

“Also I heard the voice of the Lord…”

  • Isaiah first saw God’s holiness and became deeply aware of his own sinfulness.
  • He confessed his unworthiness, and God provided cleansing for his sin.
  • Only after this experience did Isaiah hear the Lord’s call.
  • God does not call us because we are already perfect.
  • He cleanses and prepares those who are willing to serve Him.

“…Whom shall I send…”

  • God was looking for someone to carry His message to His people.
  • The question gave Isaiah an opportunity to respond freely to God’s call.
  • God’s work requires willing hearts that are ready to be used for His purpose.
  • The call was not about Isaiah’s importance.
  • It was about being available for God’s work.

“…and who will go for Us?”

  • God’s message needed someone who was willing to go and deliver it.
  • The work would not be easy, because Isaiah would speak to people who would often resist God’s message.
  • Yet God’s messenger was called to remain faithful whether the people accepted or rejected the message.

“Then I said, ‘Here am I! Send me.’”

  • Isaiah did not make excuses or wait until he understood everything about the task.
  • Having experienced God’s cleansing, he willingly offered himself for service.
  • “Here am I” expresses readiness and availability.
  • “Send me” shows that Isaiah was willing to go wherever God directed him.
  • His response was not based on confidence in his own ability.
  • It was a response of faith in the God who had cleansed and called him.

Spiritual Meaning

  • Isaiah 6:8 teaches that God’s grace prepares us for His service.
  • God first revealed His holiness to Isaiah, then cleansed him, and finally called him to carry His message.
  • The order is important.
  • We do not serve God to earn His grace.
  • We respond to His grace by giving ourselves to His service.

What This Means for You

  • God may call you to serve Him in ways you did not expect.
  • You may feel unworthy, unprepared, or unable to do what He asks.
  • Remember Isaiah.
  • God can cleanse, prepare, and strengthen those who are willing to follow Him.
  • Your service may be through preaching, teaching, helping others, sharing your testimony, supporting ministry, or faithfully serving where you are.
  • You do not need to know everything before you begin.
  • When God calls you to serve, give Him your willing heart and trust Him to lead you.

A Final Thought

  • Isaiah’s answer was simple: “Here am I! Send me.”
  • He was willing because he had first experienced God’s cleansing grace.
  • The same God who called Isaiah still calls His people to share His message of repentance, faith, and hope.
  • The question is not whether you have enough ability.
  • The question is whether you are willing to place yourself in God’s hands.
  • When God calls, will your answer be, “Here am I! Send me”?
